IMA Muscle Shoals chapter will be presenting IMA®’s Leadership Academy Workshop: Cultivating a Bias-Free Workplace


This workshop is designed to increase our awareness of the different factors that generate all kinds of biases in the workplace and how they hurt the workplace. We will also discuss personal and organizational strategies for reducing workplace bias.


Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees will be able to:
• Define bias and identify how cognitive reasoning and stereotypes impact biases.
• Describe unconscious bias.
• Explain the value of diversity and inclusion.
• Recognize bias and its effects in the workplace.
• Discuss strategies for overcoming biases.


Presenters: Derek Fuzzell and Brad Monterio, IMA D&I Committee Members

Derek Fuzzell serves as the CFO of PAHO/WHO Federal Credit Union in Washington, D.C. Derek was recognized by the Credit Union Executive Society as a Finalist for the 2017 Next Top Credit Union Executive competition for his work on educating employees of Credit Unions on how Business Strategy is derived from the disciplines Finance, Accounting, Risk, and Economics. Derek previously worked for Northwest Federal Credit Union and Navy Federal Credit Union in various leadership roles.

As an IMA member, Derek has served on the Global Board of Directors and has worked on both the Performance Oversight & Audit Committee and the Planning & Development Committee. Derek served as chair of the Investment Subcommittee for 2018-2019, chair of the Conference Program Committee for 2017-2018, and is currently serving as chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Derek is also the current president of the Nation’s Capital Chapter and a faculty member of the IMA Leadership Academy. Derek was the 2018 recipient of IMA’s Exemplary Young Professional Award.

Derek earned his MBA from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) and his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Houston.  

Brad Monterio
 is chief learning officer for the California Society of CPAs (CalCPA), the largest state CPA society in the U.S. with more than 45,000 members. He is responsible for portfolio management, product development and delivery, product marketing, technology platforms, instructional design, content partnerships, competency frameworks, and innovation for CalCPA professional learning products and services. He is vice chair of the CalCPA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission. Previously, Monterio was managing director of Colcomgroup, Inc., a strategy, marketing, and advisory services firm, for 24 years, as well as a commercial and investment banker on Wall Street. 

As an engaged IMA volunteer, Monterio is IMA’s Council representative to the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), and chair emeritus of both the IMA Diversity & Inclusion Committee and IMA Technology Solutions & Practices (TS&P) Committee.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1988, speaks French, and is an avid traveler.
