Based on two (2) IMA Educational Case Journal (IECJ) studies, “Watson Water Technologies: Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace” and “Bonnie Morgen: First Day on the Job and Facing an Ethical Dilemma”, you will follow a fictional plot line that introduces Melissa Parks, an up-and-coming accounting/finance professional, as she navigates her career path and faces multiple ethical dilemmas along the way.


The goal of the course is to appraise the importance of ethics in accounting organizations by examining ethical dilemmas in the workplace at various professional levels and analyzing resources or corresponding regulations to make ethical decisions. This course will create an appreciation for how an ethical framework and adherence to relevant legislation can contribute to the decision-making process and ultimately create an ethical organizational culture.

 

Learning Objectives:

After this session, you will be able to:

  1. Identify significant ethical dilemmas in the workplace.
  2. Describe alternative courses of action to navigate ethical dilemmas.
  3. Analyze legislation and resources to draw conclusions about ethical dilemmas.
  4. Apply critical thinking skills to make ethical decisions.
  5. Support ethical judgements and resolutions using the IMA Statement of Professional Practice.

Dr. Mark Lawrence, CPA, CMA, CFM, CGMA is Professor of Accounting at the University of North Alabama (UNA). Dr. Lawrence joined UNA in January 2004. Prior to joining UNA, Dr. Lawrence was an Adjunct Professor in Accounting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Jefferson State Community College, and Faulkner University. He has over 20 years of Professional accounting experience working for Sonat Inc., Southern Natural Gas Company, El Paso Corporation, and Vulcan Materials Company. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the American Accounting Association (AAA), and the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA).

Dr. Lawrence currently serves as President and Treasurer of the Muscle Shoals Chapter of IMA.
